When choosing dental implants, we understand that you may have a lot of questions about what dental implants are and what the process is like. Take a look at the questions below, and if you don’t see your question there, feel free to ask us by giving us a call or filling out the contact box.
The process in its entirety can take anywhere from two to four months. However, this is mostly due to the healing period required after the placement of the first implant fixture. The healing period is required to allow osseointegration to take place. As for time in the dental chair, each piece of the implant requires about an hour in the chair to be placed.
Osseointegration is unique to dental implants in terms of tooth replacement treatments, because it’s a fusion procedure that secures the implant into the jawbone. The titanium material of the implant triggers the surrounding bone to regenerate, winding fibers around the implant as though it were a real tooth root. You can’t find this same result with dentures or dental bridges.
Not during the procedure itself. We work hard to ensure that patients don’t feel pain when their implant is being placed, but it is normal to feel some slight pain or soreness after the procedure is completed and the sedation wears off. The pain can be treated with over-the-counter pain medication, unless stronger medication needs to be prescribed.
Yes! The only prerequisites are to have fair oral health, and have a good foundation of jawbone to support the implant. We have had many patients who made a successful transition from other dental devices to dental implants.
Yes, to a degree. If you are planning to leave town for more than a month, please let us know so that we can schedule your implant treatment around your plans. Since there is typically a long period of healing between the implant fixture and the next steps, you should be able to fit your vacation in this timeline.
This will depend on the age of your son or daughter. It’s not recommended for children to get dental implants, as they are still growing and implants can influence their development. If your child has already reached full growth, and lost one or more permanent “adult” teeth, then contact us about next steps. However, if your child is still growing and has lost an adult tooth, consult us about alternative treatments.
Yes, but it may require a few extra steps before you will be ready for dental implants. We recommend that you treat your tooth decay and your gum disease first before you can move on to dental implants. By clearing the diseased tissues, you can better prepare your smile for implants and the process of osseointegration.
We know that the dental implant process can be intimidating or confusing, and that’s why we’re here to answer your questions anytime! Give us a call or fill out the contact form to learn more about dental implants or to schedule a consultation with Dr. Bruno Carré.
